Established in 1694, Rust en Vrede is proud to be part of a remarkable three hundred year old wine tradition. Since 1977 the Engelbrecht family has specialized in the exclusive production of red wine, with the focus on Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Proprietor Jean Engelbrecht has worked to establish Rust en Vrede as one of South Africa’s premium red wine estates, with full-bodied and complex wines that reflect the uniqueness of its Helderberg terroir.
Power and concentration, within a tightly woven structure showing lots of promise. Youthful tannins are grippy now, but appetising and balanced by generous cassis and black berries as well as vanilla and spice from oak. Complex and multi-dimensional - further inspection also reveals sour Morello cherry, plum and even wild fig. Those who can resist the temptation will be rewarded well with cellaring.
5 - 8 years maturation should greatly reward with complexity and elegance.
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Pinotage, 15% Merlot
Delicious matched with some slow-roasted Rosemary Lamb.
An iron fist in velvet glove, Hartenberg's flagship red, previously only available at the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction. A dark centered, black-red and ruby rim. Elegant, black fruit with violets, cloves, smokiness and black pepper on the bouquet. The palate shows sweet ripe fruit, spicy oak, elegance and rich, dry tannins made for the long haul. The palate ends with a lingering, savoury finish.
Independent Tasting Note
“Ripe and dense, but nicely refined, with stylish Kona coffee and mulled currant and loganberry fruit notes laced with melted licorice snap and spice. Liberally toasted, but integrated on the long, smoldering finish.” James Molesworth
